Aspar shows off full 2012 project

The Mapfre Convention Centre in Madrid was the setting for a special presentation by the Aspar Team on Wednesday, as owner Jorge ‘Aspar’ Martinez discussed his 2012 project.

The Spanish team, which unveiled its MotoGP™ line-up last week in Valencia, showed off a video presentation detailing its project across all three World Championship classes, including Moto2™ and Moto3™.

“Every year we set ourselves bigger challenges,” said Martinez, “and year after year we achieve our goals. Last year we were once again 125cc World Champions, we don’t want to stop growing and the base of our team is excellent. In Moto3 we have a challenge, to be the best again, and in Moto2 we have two World Champions who’ll fight for the highest possible targets. In MotoGP we have a big challenge in front of us, to be the best in the new (CRT) concept within the premier class.”

Experienced rider Hector Faubel, who will ride in Moto3, stated that his sole aim this year will be to fight for the title, whilst Alberto Moncayo was highly satisfied with how his pre-season had gone.

Returning to the Moto2 category, in which he won the title in 2010, Toni Elias said he aims to be able to fight for a victory at the season-opening race in Qatar in just over a week, while 2011 125cc Champion and 2012 Moto2 rookie Nico Terol said he had made very good progression throughout the pre-season in his adaptation to the class.

Bankia Aspar riders among the quickest in Moto3

Alberto Moncayo and Hector Faubel made significant progess during the three days of Moto3™ testing held last week in Jerez.

Plenty of information was collected by the Moto3™ teams during the three days of testing that concluded on Saturday at Jerez. The teams will continue work inside their workshops now, before the next time the category contenders face off at the final test of the pre-season, the so-called GP zero, scheduled for 19-21 March at the same southern Spanish track.

Alberto Moncayo had a day as normal on Saturday after missing Friday’s track time due to a crash. The rider from Cadiz hardly noticed he missed a day, producing times similar to those from the first day. At noon, a small modification to the chassis was made which allowed him to dip below the 1’48 mark thus confirming him again as one of the fastest riders in the Moto3 field.

Teammate Hector Faubel also established himself as a rider to beat in the new category despite a mechanical problem forcing him to change his plans when he was ready to challenge the clock. Yet Faubel still declared his satisfaction with the work accomplished at the test.

Alberto Moncayo 1’47.90 (52 laps): 

"It seems everything is back in place after the crash yesterday. I had a little headache but I didn’t stop riding and made up some lost time. We still have a lot of things to try but I think this test has been a big step forward. Regardless of the lap times, this has been a good test and I'm really happy with the pace we set on race tires. I’m also happy we were able to make up for lost time and we made great progress, so I hope we continue like this in March at the next test."

Hector Faubel 1’48.40 (58 laps): 

"I feel a bit disappointed because today we couldn’t test everything we wanted to. Overall the day went well, but when we were about to make the best lap of the day, we had a problem with the chain that interrupted our plans. We got back on track, but the track temperature haddropped."

"I want to stay positive, and although in these last two days some things haven’t gone very well, we tried everything we wanted and we saw this bike evolve every session. Now we’ll just analyze all the information we have and think about the next test in March. I feel we still have a lot of room for improvement, both with the chassis and the engine, so I am calm."

Alberto Moncayo: "We would like to be regularly among the top five"

Moto3: Aspar tests the Kalex-KTM

December 20th was the last day of testing at the Ricardo Tormo Circuit di Valencia, for Team Aspar and their new Moto3 machine. Taking advantage of the favorable Spanish climate, they continued to gain familiarity with the Kalex-KTM they will race next season.

Participating in the test were Hector Faubel, Alberto Moncayo and Joan Olive. No lap times were released by the team, and 125cc world champion Nico Terol was also seen in the pits observing the activity.
