Pirro Make Progress, Bautista Disappointed

Michele Pirro Losail 2012

Michele Pirro continues to surprise on board the Honda CBR 1000R powered FTR CRT machine despite it having on a few hundred kilometres on the clock. The Italian rookie shaved a second and a half off his best time from yesterday in tonight's second and third free practice sessions and could have gone even faster but for a small technical setback with the bike. Alvaro Bautista struggled for front feel on the RC213V tonight and has work to do ahead of tomorrow night's qualifying session.

Alvaro Bautista (10th 1’ 56” 771) “Today wasn't a good day for us – we tried to improve the feeling with the bike from yesterday but didn't manage it. My feeling with the front just doesn't allow me to push although when we changed to the soft tyre it improved so maybe we should have done that from the start and we'd be in better shape right now. Anyway, it's important to try these things because we need to make our tyre choice for the race. After 11 laps we had more grip than we'd had with the hard so I think the soft has good potential for the race. Now we need to look at the data and try to improve the front.”

Michele Pirro (15th 1’ 58” 800) “We have taken another big step and improved by a second and a half from yesterday, closing the gap to the top CRT bike, so that gives us reason to be satisfied. Obviously we have a lot still to do but we are staying positive. Our priority is to work on the electronics because they play such a big part. We are trying to work without making mistakes, I have a great team around me so I think we just need to keep working in the same direction and we will get our rewards.”

Fausto Gresini “It wasn't an easy night for Alvaro. He struggled more than yesterday and we need to know why. There is one particular section of track that he's having difficulty with so we need to have a close look at the data and try to get more out of the bike. I should say that apart from the top guys everybody else is very close so it looks like it could be a tight race from fourth place back. Like yesterday Michele and the CRT bike were a pleasant surprise. Even though the bike is so young it is improving every time and that's great for me and all the guys in the team because this first part of the season was never going to be easy.”

Some problems of confidence with the bike have affected the Gresini's performance

Alvaro Bautista Losail 2012

First day of the 2012 season and the first free practice session in Doha for the MotoGP. Some problems of confidence with the bike have affected the performance of Alvaro Bautista, however, although not far from the first used for the entire shift on the hard tires. However, good prospects for tomorrow for the Spaniard and his Honda RC213V. Positive start and almost beyond expectations for CRT RDF powered Honda CBR 1000R and Michele Pirro. While still very immature for a few miles run the CRT Team San Carlo Honda Gresini finished just three tenths off the best time from CRT. A positive performance that bodes well for the future.

Alvaro Bautista (7 ° 1 '57 "512) "And 'the world began 2012 on a track that always creates some problems with grip in the first free practice session. We tried to work on finding a good feeling with the bike but I had some problems in the corner entry because I jumped in front and then I had a lot of confidence to get stronger. We have also used for the entire round hard rubber back and with the current condition of the asphalt bike was very "spinning" and it was hard out of corners. So our work plan for tomorrow is to work on electronics and buoyancy geometries with the aim to improve my confidence with the bike. "

Michele Pirro (15 ° 2 '00 "322) "The first day did not go bad, we tried to run as much as possible to become familiar with this track on which I have never shot with this bike. We are continuing the work started at Jerez and we are making significant progress. I have confidence in the team and I am increasingly convinced that every race we will be increasingly competitive. Unfortunately the bike is still too young has only a few hundred kilometers of life and like all new things it takes time. I have the right people at my side and trying to give my best every turn, will improve. In any case I did not expect you to be just three tenth from De Puniet an experienced driver with a CRT competitive. It 'was a first great satisfaction for me and the boys. "

Fausto Gresini "The first practice session did not go badly at all. With Bautista as we are not far from the best race pace and also we now have not even used the soft tire so I'm quite happy. We worked the race in perspective and we are clear about actions to do his best so that Alvaro confidence with the bike. It also was positively surprised by Pirro that far only three tenths off the best CRT and so it seems almost unbelievable considering the few kilometers that our bike. So one day the whole positive. Gresini Team set for season start

Alvaro Bautista Honda Gresini 2012

The San Carlo Honda Gresini team approaches this weekend's Commercialbank Grand Prix of Qatar ready for a new challenge, as it competes with riders Álvaro Bautista and Michele Pirro in MotoGP™ in 2012.

Bautista will be on a Honda RC213V in 2012 with Pirro riding an FTR chassis powered by a Honda 1000R engine, as part of the new CRT regulations introduced for this year's World Championship.

The team also continues with the memory of Marco Simoncelli at the centre of its determination to make 2012 a successful campaign.

Álvaro Bautista:
“I am really looking forward to racing again because testing is pretty stressful with so much work to do in and out of the box, the days are endless. Now is the time for the real action, for us to give everything. This will be my first race with Team San Carlo Honda Gresini and it's exciting because the guys are working well and I think we have made the connection we need for me to exploit my potential in Qatar. I like the circuit, it's fast and flowing and has a nice long straight. Unfortunately I am still not keen on the idea of racing at night, even though the track is well lit it is still not the same as racing in the day. Anyway, it is an investing event and I have the machinery to be fighting at the front so I will be giving my best to do that.”

Michele Pirro:
“I am feeling nervous but excited ahead of this new challenge. Obviously I know I don't have the means to run at the front but I will be giving my all to be amongst the best of the CRT entrants. Unfortunately we only have 500km on the clock so we know we have a lot of work to do with the new bike but we know the potential is there and we will do everything we can to be as competitive as possible in Qatar.”

Fausto Gresini, Team Owner:
“It all starts again now but I can't honestly imagine right now what this first Grand Prix is going to be like for us. It is a brand new championship for everybody and we are taking on a new, difficult challenge. We want to do well and we think we can because Álvaro has a good bike and every chance of running at the front. This is a chance for Álvaro to show his ability but also for us to start looking to the future because Marco's tragedy hit us hard. Marco is and always will be in our hearts, the pain is still fresh and strong but we decided to carry on, we are doing it with Álvaro and this is the best way. It also helps that we have a new challenge in the CRT project with Michele Pirro, making his debut in MotoGP. It won't be easy and it has already been a challenge just to get the bike on track and have Michele with us in Qatar. It is a completely new project, there is a lot of work to do and we know it but I am fascinated by the concept of CRT and I am proud of the enthusiasm shown by my guys to get involved. I think it will be a successful formula and Team San Carlo Honda Gresini can be a part of that success.”

Bautista confident despite tough Test

The final day of pre-season at Jerez could have gone better for Álvaro Bautista, with two crashes denying him the opportunity to complete his testing programme. His race pace is good but the Spaniard perhaps struggled a little for the confidence to push for a faster time because of his two tumbles. Michele Pirro paid the price for his bike's youthfulness on Sunday, setting some decent lap times in the morning but struggling to improve his pace in the afternoon due to technical problems.

Álvaro Bautista:
"It hasn't been a great day for us. We started out well and tried some interesting electronic solutions this morning, as well as two different Bridgestone tyres, to try and work out which gave me the most confidence. Then in the afternoon we were doing a race simulation when I crashed not once but twice, when the front let go without warning. I still don't know exactly what happened and naturally that damaged my confidence in the front and I couldn't push to the limit as I would have liked. Anyway, we are not losing faith because we found some good things and now we just have to prepare for the first race in the best way we can. Racing at night in Qatar is not easy but I still feel confident even after the worst afternoon of pre-season testing. My feeling with the team is perfect and I am sure they will help me to recover the confidence I lost today."

Michele Pirro:
"All I can say is that we have a lot to work on! Lap by lap I am building my confidence with the bike but I couldn't really make the most of it because we had a problem with the bike and I had to come back into the pit box. They are teething problems but it is frustrating for me because I want to squeeze out everything I feel inside. It is a shame but I know that the guys are working hard, I have complete faith in them and I am sure that we will soon be reaping the rewards of all their effort. We just need to be patient."

Frustrating day for Gresini riders

Adverse weather conditions slowed progress for the MotoGP™ teams present for the second day of testing at Jerez de la Frontera today (Saturday). However, Álvaro Bautista at least had the chance to complete his first laps on the Honda RC213V in the wet, establishing a good feeling. It was a less positive day for Michele Pirro, who needs dry time and could only make use of the final 30 minutes of the session, leaving plenty of work to do tomorrow.

Álvaro Bautista:
"It has been a similar day to the second Test at Sepang in Malaysia but we at least managed to get some laps in the wet and the first impressions are good because I have confidence in the bike so that's positive. Then the track started to dry out but there was no point riding because the wet tyres just tore up. In the final 30 minutes we got some track time and I was happy with what we achieved but it wasn't really dry. In conclusion it hasn't been a productive day so we just have to hope for better conditions tomorrow."

Michele Pirro:
"A real shame because with such a young bike it is important for us to get some laps but the weather has played us a bad hand today. We have lost a day of testing and will have to try and make it up tomorrow, which makes life difficult. Patience! We managed to get some laps in the final 30 minutes even though the conditions weren't perfect and at least got some information to work from tomorrow."

Fausto Gresini:
"Today was endless, with the track conditions bringing everything to a halt. It was neither wet nor dry so everything was difficult. Luckily when the track was at its wettest Álvaro managed to get some laps in and built his confidence with the bike in these conditions. The most important job he was did was some practice starts with different settings, which was very useful. Overall it was a waste of a day, especially for the CRT bike because we were only able to get a few laps in and set up for tomorrow. The good thing is that we continue to move forward every time we get on track and that gives us confidence. It will be an intense day tomorrow trying to make up for lost time, which for the CRT project is a precious commodity."

Bautista: "I'm on this team as a step forward"

As the countdown to the Official Test in Jerez next week, motogp.com spoke to the Spanish rider about important challenges he faces this year, favorites for the title and renewed hopes for the San Carlo Honda Gresini in 2012.

Upon his return from Italy, where the the San Carlo Honda Gresini team’s ambitious 2012 project was officially presented this week, Alvaro Bautista spent the last few days working on his fitness. After a prolonged supermoto session on Friday morning of Friday, Bautisa spoke about objectives for his third year in the premier class, work at the Official Test in Jerez next week and the challege picking up the baton on the team that was formerly led by Marco Simoncelli.

How was the presentation in Milán? What was the atmosphere like in the team?
"It’s a unique situation with respect to last year. In 2011 I was the only rider for Suzuki and this year I’m on the Gresini team, which has a presense in all three classes in the championship. I had the opportunity to get to know the Sponsors, the people that work on the team, and over there everything was really positive. After the final race of last year, which was really difficult, it seems like everyone really wants to return to racing and getting good result and the atmosphere was really positive."

This year for you presents many changes, not just the engine capacity, but because you are on a new team and riding a different bike. How has it been to far fitting all the changes into the preseason?
"So far the testing has gone really well. The capacity is different but so is the bike, it’s quite different than the Suzuki that I rode until now in MotoGP. There are far more electronics and I had to learn how to ride it with them. It now also has a lot more power than the 800cc. The balance is positive because every time I have ridden it, I’ve gone better. It’s a good feeling. There is still a lot of work left to do but I think we are on the right track to continue to improve."

You left the second Sepang test satisfied despite the weather keeping you in the garage for a lot of the test. What do you have left to work on at the Official Test in Jerez next week?
"At the last test we didn’t get out on track much because of the bad weather and a problem we had with the Pedrosa’s engine [a setback that forced Japan to recall the engine and prevented all the Honda riders from riding on the second day of testing]. We would have liked to try some things with the geometry of the bike to let me to be more comfortable and that’s what we have pending for Jerez. Over all, there is a good foundation as far as electronics is concerned because, as I said, this bike has many more parameters than the Suzuki I still need to understand what does and does not work for me. I’ll try to put everything in place and get a good base, because in two weeks it’s the first race of the season."

How are you doing physically right now?
"Very good, this year I wanted to prepare myself well because the engine is a 1000cc. I hope that this hard training will help me on the bike so that I will be less tired and can perform my best."

This year you will be on the same RC213V as Stoner and Pedrosa. Are you going to compete the exact same bike as them or will your bike have some differences from the official Factory team?
"In theory, there are four Hondas. Two on the Factory team, Bradl’s and mine, and they all start with the same base level of parts and electronics. The only difference is that my bike will use Showa forks and shock instead of Öhlins, and the brakes will be Nissin. Those are the only differences. Showa wants to return to the World Championship and they proposed that I be the rider for the brand and develop it. So, the bikes will start equal and as changes are made, obviously the factory riders will take precedence."

You are starting the championship with an unusual black fairing, a tribute to Marco Simoncelli…
"Yes, it’s a small show of respect. We are starting with black fairings, as you know in other years the bike was completely white,so this year as a sign of respect to the team, a sign of mourning so to speak, I’m starting with a black bike. Throughout the season it will change color and at the end it will turn white."

How do you plan to manage the fact that you are occupying the place of a rider who has left such a huge void in the MotoGP community and among fans?
"Well, I am trying not to think about it actually. I’m on a really profesional team and focusing on my work. There is always the wake of the rider who came before you on a team, but is a different situation. I am working with different technicians and mechanics and it’s not quite the same situation, I don’t feel like I’m taking on all the weight and responsibility. I have the opportunity here and have to try to make the most of it."

Do you believe that the technical level of the team and the bike you are on this year will allow you to make a big step in terms of you results?
"Yes, I'm on this team for this reason, to make a step forward. This team has always had good support from HRC and good parts. This year we have the support of Honda and in principle we’ll have the parts to try to fight for good results. I trust the team and the team trusts me, so together with the support of Honda I think we can do well."

As for the lists of title favorites, as nice as it would be to be there, at the moment you are not on the list.
"At the moment this is so. The logical favorites are the reigning champion, Stoner, the runner-up, which is Lorenzo, Pedrosa, who also needs just a small step to get there, and Dovizioso, who was third. I think those are the candidates for the championship ... Our goal is to be there, but for the moment the ones who have to defend their status are those who are the favorites. We will try to get there, but for now we are still behind them."

The San Carlo Honda Gresini Team presentation in Milan

The Fausto Gresini led team presented its three projects for the 2012 season, with riders Álvaro Bautista, Michele Pirro and Nicolás Antonelli.

The San Carlo Honda Gresini team chose the Galleria del Vento at the headquarters of the Polytechnic University of Milan to host the presentation of the MotoGP, CRT and Moto3 projects for the 2012 season. The ambitious project has the motto “Technology and Passion” which summarizes the team's philosophy for this new adventure. Fausto Gresini and Alberto Vitaloni commence the challenge with energy and enthusiasm and a vision to build a project based on the present and the future of motorcycling.

2012 sees the interests of the team diversified in many directions: Álvaro Bautista will race in MotoGP with the Honda RC213V, Michele Pirro will be responsible for the FTR with the Honda CBR1000 RR engine in CRT category and Niccolò Antonelli Honda lead the NSF250R in Moto3.

Alberto Vitaloni:
"Technology and Passion is the perfect combination and remains the driving force behind the project we are doing with the Gresini team. From here a new season begins and we are proud to continue a collaboration that has given us much excitement in recent years. We want to continue on behalf of Marco (Simoncelli), because I'm sure he would have wanted it that way. I hope the choice we made will bring us new successes."

Fausto Gresini:
"It was a fantastic day, full of positivity. We are starting again with renewed enthusiasm, trying to combine the best “Technology and Passion”. Having a partnership with San Carlo is a great source of pride because the energy that President Alberto Vitaloni sends out is essential for everyone. We have a comprehensive program for 2012, participating on several fronts: in MotoGP with Alvaro Bautista and Michele Pirro (CRT), with Niccolo Antonelli in Moto3 and in Moto2 with Gino Rea and Ratthapark Wilairot. It was also very nice to meet with students at the Polytechnic University of Milan. I can say that we are starting on the right foot and feel confident for the season start in Qatar on April 8th."

Álvaro Bautista:
"I am very happy to be in Milan for the presentation of the San Carlo Honda Gresini team. It’s the start of a new adventure for me and I think we have all the elements to do well this season. I’m satisfied that the Sepang test were very positive and now we head to Jerez to finish the job and try to find an even better set up with the Honda RC213."

Michele Pirro:
"I've finally been able to touch my bike with my own hands! Is beautiful and I'm eager to try it. I’m convinced that the team did a good job and therefore I feel confident ahead of this new challenge. At first it won’t be easy, but I’ll work with my guys to get positive results. "

Niccolò Antonelli:
"For me, everything is really new and it’s been exciting to experience the atmosphere at the presentation. Standing next to Michele and Alvaro, I could breathe in the smell of the championship and I’m charged for next season. I found a good set up that felt good with my Moto3 and soon at the Jerez test I’ll try to improve it even more. "

Bautista: "We have taken a big step forward"

After two days of inclement weather, conditions finally held out on the third and final day of testing at Sepang, allowing the teams to work without interruption.

Team San Carlo Honda Gresini rider Alvaro Bautista worked intensely despite a minor crash this morning in turn eight. The rider and crew are heading home feeling satisfied and confident before returning to duty at Jerez from 23 to 25 March for the final Test of the 2012 preseason.

Alvaro Bautista:
“I am satisfied because we were finally able to get a full day under our belt after being here for two days already and only managing to get out on track for the first morning. Obviously it was a tough day, because we had to pack everything in, so we started out first thing this morning and only took a short break at the hottest part of the day. We worked mainly on adapting to the 1000cc bike and even though I was tired by the end of the day, I was satisfied with our progress. Unfortunately I made a mistake on my first lap of one run when the tyres were still not up to temperature and ran wide onto the astroturf and then had a small crash. Luckily I wasn't hurt and we were able to continue working on the other bike, mainly with suspension settings, and putting together a decent rhythm. I am happy though because we have taken a big step forward and closed the gap to the top guys. We know we still have a long way to go but I am confident because the relationship with the team is great and I know we will make more progress in the next test at Jerez.”

Fausto Gresini:
“This has been an important test for us because Alvaro needed a lot of laps on the RC213V to get confident with the bike and above all learn the methods required to work on a Honda, which is different to what he was riding last year. He also needs more time on the 1000cc bike because he hasn’t had as many opportunities to ride as some of the other riders. We had some technical suspension updates to test, which we are pleased with, but we also need time and information to get the best out of them. Overall, it’s been a positive test because Alvaro knows that he can set a better lap time and he has improved since the last test, closing the gap to the fastest guys. It’s a shame about the crash because it set him back a little, but we are optimistic about the future.”

A day adjustments for Alvaro Bautista

The San Carlo Honda Gresini rider avoided a crash and finished with the fifth fastest time on the first day of the second Official Test at Sepang.

A heavy rainstorm put a halt to any further progress after the morning session for Team San Carlo Honda Gresini's Alvaro Bautista, limiting the rider's track time to just 24 laps. His fifteenth lap proved to be his best, stopping the clock at 2’02.959. With no new updates to test on the bike, the team concentrated on making set-up changes to the existing package as Bautista continues to familiarize himself with the Honda RC213V.

Alvaro Bautista (2’02.959 – 24 laps):
"The track surface was in poor condition and it was very difficult to push so we focused on experimenting with some different set-up solutions to increase my confidence on the 1000cc bike. The rainfall brought our day to an early conclusion because with the already precarious conditions, it was better to leave everything else we had planned until tomorrow. I had a miraculous escape this morning in turn five when I basically crashed but managed to keep the bike upright on my elbow!"

Alvaro Bautista impressed with Honda electronics

Alvaro Bautista reckons Honda’s electronics are so well advanced that when he made his RC213V 1000cc debut in Sepang last week he felt slower than Suzuki’s 800!

The Spaniard finished ninth with a best time 2.01.384 that left him less than half-a-second from the top six.

The Gresini Honda rider said: “The electronics are absolutely incredible. My feeling on the first two days was that this bike was less powerful than the Suzuki 800.

"But you were always fighting a lot to control the Suzuki, so that probably made it feel like you were going fast. With the Honda everything is easier and the lap time comes easier.”

The test also gave Bautista the chance to familiarise himself with Honda’s famed seamless shift gearbox.

He added: “The gearbox is really impressive. When you are in a long turn and you have to change gear, the bike doesn’t move one millimetre.”

Bautista’s RC213V will run Showa and not Ohlins suspension in 2012.

Showa is an affiliate of Honda, and MCN understands part of the suspension deal helped Gresini secure the seamless shift gearbox for much less than its budget blasting price of £500,000 that satellite teams must pay.

Bautista pleased with Sepang progress

Alvaro Bautista says he will make the most of the 'wealth' of knowledge he has gained of the Gresini Honda RC213V during the three-day MotoGP test at Sepang.

Bautista continued to improve his time on each day of the official test and by the conclusion of the shakedown had shaved 1.5 seconds off his pace from the opening day at the Malaysian venue.

The Spaniard finished in ninth place overall on the time-sheets, just over a second adrift of Repsol Honda's Casey Stoner.

Bautista was impressed by the electronics and engine management system on the 1000cc San Carlo Gresini Honda and is looking ahead to making more strides forward at the next MotoGP test at Sepang at the end of this month.

“I finished the first test and my evaluation of these three days I think is positive. Even today I made another step forward especially in the rhythm.

“We have worked very well and the first contact with the RC213V has been particularly good,” said Bautista.

“Now, before the next test later this month ever here at Sepang, I have a little time to reflect and think about all the wealth of knowledge acquired in these three days.

“We must put them all in the right place and be ready for the next three days of testing in Malaysia. I'm happy, satisfied and very confident for the future.

“The synergy with the guys and Honda is wonderful and this will enable us to achieve positive results.

“Lastly, I have to say that the thing that most impressed me the RC213V is definitely the electronics and its management that allows you to (effectively use) the incredible power of the 'thousand.'”

Bautista progresses on second test day

The majority of today's work was focused in the first part of the day to avoid too much track action during the hottest part of the afternoon. The main task was to establish a way forward so that Bautista could gradually improve his lap times from yesterday and set out a clear programme for the final day tomorrow. It has been a positive test so far and the atmosphere within the team is one of determination and confidence.

Álvaro Bautista:

”The second day of the test has seen us improve our lap times slightly, but above all put together a consistent pace over a series of outings. Today I had more confidence with the bike and I was able to push harder, which I am particularly pleased about. We tried some things with the electronics and found some setting solutions that will give us an idea of what we need to do tomorrow.”

"I am sure that we can improve the bike and my riding significantly. Obviously I need to get used to riding a 'thousand' because it has different characteristics than an 800, mainly in that it has more power and you have to use that in a different way. I have been able to see how professional this team is. They are doing a great job so that gives me confidence for tomorrow, when we will try to take another step forward.”

First day on the Honda RC213V for Bautista

The 2012 MotoGP season officially got underway today with the first day of preseason testing at Sepang. There was a melancholy feel to the day following the tragic events of October and the memory of Marco Simoncelli remains in the hearts of all those present, as it will for many years to come.

Shortly before lunchtime Álvaro Bautista took to the circuit on board the Honda RC213V for a shakedown that became more and more encouraging as the laps went by. By the end of the session he had completed 45 circulations of the Malaysian track, with some impressive lap times and a positive early feel for the Honda RC213V.

Álvaro Bautista: Best time: 2’02.869 (45 laps)

"This was my first day on the RC213V and I am very pleased with it because I instantly felt comfortable riding a 'thousand'. Obviously after a three-month break from racing it is not easy to get back out there because you have to reset your mind and body to the task and rediscover your pace. We have worked on adapting the bike to my riding style and I have just tried to get confident without worrying about lap times at this early stage.”

"I am satisfied because I am working well with the team and everybody is putting in a lot of effort. Over the next two days we will work on general set-up and the electronics but I am already feeling positive because we are not too far off the fastest times and we haven't started pushing yet.”

Alvaro Bautista keen to make 1000cc MotoGP debut

Gresini Honda rider Alvaro Bautista says he is eager to understand the performance of the new generation 1000cc MotoGP machines when testing for the 2012 world championship campaign kicks off in Malaysia next week.

When the former 125GP world champion made his Gresini debut in Valencia back in November, he rode an 800cc RC212V.

The Spaniard has never ridden a 1000cc prototype but he will get his first taste next Tuesday (January 31) when the three-day Sepang test gets underway.

Bautista, who joined Fausto Gresini’s squad after Suzuki suspended its involvement in MotoGP until at least 2014, told MCN: “I’m not sure what to expect because the 800 for me had too much power and speed.

"So I don’t understand how a 1000 will work but I am looking forward to it. I’ve heard from the other riders there will be more sliding and more power at the bottom when you exit the corner, so it should be fun."

Bautista experiences Africa with Riders for Health

MotoGP star Alvaro Bautista embarked on an adventure of a lifetime to witness how he and other MotoGP riders are helping people in Africa receive reliable health care.

The Spanish rider joined 18 other motorcyclists plus Grand Prix racing legend, Randy Mamola, on November 23rd for Riders for Health Experience Africa, for a cross country journey aboard the same bikes that health workers use to deliver health care across Africa.

Early in the venture, Bautista recounted his second day in Zambia with a blog submission. At the conclusion of the cross country expedition, the 27 year old shared the following thoughts about the experience.

“People often wonder what it is that MotoGP riders do during the winter when there are no races. Obviously, there is lots of training to be done, but this November I was lucky enough to visit Zambia with the amazing charity, Riders for Health, and take part in their Experience Africa adventure.”

“The riding was great fun and the tracks and off-road routes were all twisting, undulating, fast in places, across a wide variety of surfaces. We road past savannah grasslands, maize crops and into forests. We were riding for a week and finished our adventure in Livingstone, just a few kilometres from Victoria Falls. I thought that my first days riding had been amazing, but the last two were even better.

”I always knew that it was important to support Riders for Health when I donated items to their auctions at Day of Champions, but to see what they do with the money they raise is amazing. We visited a clinic and heard how hard it is for the health workers. We met people who had had to walk for many hours to visit the clinic, which had so little. One of the health workers told us they cared for a village 80 kilometres away. Without a vehicle, how would they ever reach it? It is so important to make sure the health workers have a motorcycle.”

“We were also told about how Riders for Health looks after vehicles so they never break down. It is easy to see how the rough roads could cause a bike to break. That is why the technicians are so important.

“What I will always remember about Zambia was how warm and welcoming everyone was. The children would stop and wave to us. But it was sad to think that these children do not have the chance to be children. We saw one girl, who must have been no older than four or five, carrying her baby sister on her back. She had to look after her sister instead of having the chance to be in school or to play with her friends. In Spain we live to enjoy. In Zambia, they live to survive.”

“Riders for Health gave me the opportunity to take this incredible adventure, and I would like to say a big thank you to the wonderful friends I met on the ride. They were a fantastic team and I will remember them all.”

“It has been very important for me to see just how important the work of Riders for Health is, and how the support of all of us in MotoGP is making a difference. It is something that I will remember for the rest of my life.”
