Ezpeleta: 15 million euros for a MotoGP team

Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta wants to see each MotoGP team limited to a budget of 15 million euros per season - less than half the amount being spent by reigning world champion's Honda.

During an interview with AS, Ezpeleta said: "The cap per team I'd like is 15 million, excluding the salaries of riders and marketing."

This would be achieved through "technical regulations that disproportionately punish [expensive] bike development”.

Such regulations would include the proposed 'restriction' of each factory to no more than two official and two satellite bikes (the present level), enforcement of the previously revealed target of 1 million euros maximum for a customer bike (satellite or CRT) and the planned move to a single bike per rider.

“What cannot be is that Honda now spends 40 million euros in its official team every year,” Ezpeleta added.

The Spaniard also stated that BMW intends to join MotoGP if the costs of creating a competitive project are more affordable.

The end of May has been targeted as the deadline for agreement on the post 2012 MotoGP rule changes, designed to heavily reduce costs - and improve the show - without driving out the three remaining manufacturers (Honda, Yamaha and Ducati).

Dorna Sports SL and MSMA discuss further MotoGP cost reductions

In a meeting held at Jerez on Friday, MotoGP organisers Dorna Sports and the Motorcycle Sports Manufacturers Association reviewed various proposals aimed at further strengthening the World Championship and reducing operational costs.

Dorna Sports CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta explained that ongoing discussions started at the end of last season and could lead to various decisions in an upcoming meeting to be held in Qatar, ahead of the first Grand Prix of the 2012 season.

"During the past few meetings we've been discussing the philosophy of the Championship, how to improve it in an economic sense and also thinking about the spectacle," said Ezpeleta. "We've put forward a proposal to the manufacturers, some ideas were accepted and others were not, and we now have to study their ideas so that when we sit down again in Qatar we can agree on how to make the Championship better, but also in a manner which is economically viable."

"We've been discussing a number of ideas to reduce costs, such as having a single bike per rider as in Moto2 and Moto3, limiting the number of mechanics per rider, setting a price cap on bikes and deciding that each manufacturer can only have two factory bikes and two satellite bikes, and many other things."

"We still have to study some of the ideas from the manufacturers, and overall the discussions with the manufacturers have been very positive."

Discussions continue for MotoGP's future

During day two of the Sepang test, Dorna Sports CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta gave an update on discussions over future regulations for the MotoGP World Championship.

Ezpeleta is working with the manufacturers in order to limit costs and also ensure that the customer teams (using satellite or CRT machinery) can be competitive relative to the factory teams.

Proposals currently on the table include agreeing some form of upper limit on how much each factory should spend on its MotoGP project per season, through new restrictions on the use of expensive technology and materials.

Meanwhile, the prospect of a spec ECU and/or rev limit seems to be receding.

2013 looks could see a one bike per rider rule, which would mean modifying the flag-to-flag rules for a wet/dry race, while 2014 might see a limit of two factory and two satellite bikes for each manufacturer.

The rest of the grid would therefore be made up of CRT entries.

The 1 million euro per customer bike remains a target and customer teams would therefore have the option of leasing a satellite bike for that amount, or owning a CRT bike. Some form of trophy for the top CRT rider is also possible.

Crash.net asked Ezpeleta about MotoGP grid numbers and the issue of close racing: “Number of riders is not a problem. We have 21 and that is very close to the maximum number we want to have. Now the idea is to have them competitive.

“There have always been differences between the factory bikes and whoever is leasing bikes. One of the main reasons is the riders. The best riders are with the best bikes. If we could do the opposite - best riders on worst bike - it would be different! But this is racing.

“In principal we are going step-by-step to achieve the goals. First step was to have enough bikes on the grid. We have that. Now the second thing is to have them competitive.

“We are discussing a lot of new ideas about how we can improve in all areas. For example, we also talked [on Tuesday] in the MSMA-Dorna meeting to maybe create certain rules [a 'Super License'] to admit riders to MotoGP. That is something we are talking about with the FIM and teams.”

The next meeting about the future shape of MotoGP will be held at the Jerez test on March 23.

Carmelo Ezpeleta against all, "so we can not continue"

A few days ago Carmelo Ezpeleta has released a ' really interesting interview , he talks of CRT , new regulations and the future of the championship. He did discuss his power against exposure to certain regulations that he wanted in his toy, as the only supplied by Honda Moto2. For the Spanish newspaper Marca - in an interview filmed by Bikeracing - therefore explored the concept, leaving us even more amazed at the manner of his revolution.

"Nobody imagined an economic crisis so important. Motorcycling today is not more expensive than in the recent past, we simply have less money. In 2006 there were no such problems and we have given the green light to Regulation 800cc, was a technological challenge for the teams engaged. Now the economic situation is getting worse and we must safeguard our product: we want to run the best riders on bikes from the world technological level, but at the same time, our priority is to offer exciting contests and allow riders to win most talented .

After Sepang I said that the houses involved so we can not continue. Honda is a great partner for the Moto2 class, has given much to motorcycling, but are not in line with their philosophy. I was told that if they are not able to develop their technology in racing, they are not willing to run, but in reality are the only suppliers in the IndyCar engines, yet they are regularly present ' . And 'the beginning of a rupture between the Japanese and Carmelino?

Then along the same CRT and global future: "They are fantastic bikes. And 'the salvation of the World Championship? I think it's a tool to make it palatable and safeguard our product, more needs to win in MotoGP, the strongest rider. This year I am convinced he won the best rider on the best bike, but I wish there were more opportunities for other talented drivers championship.

For the foreseeable future, however, we have agreements and resources to present a grid of 22 bikes. Definitely be racing in Argentina and Texas in 2013, we are also in talks with India and Brazil and we are considering the possibility of going to Russia. Inevitably decrease the races in Spain, will increase from 4 to 3. Jerez is confirmed for next year, the problem is from 2013 forward. "

Without doubt, the patron of the World Championship has in mind to change direction, you begin to pursue a real reduction in costs and a real appreciation of the league in terms of racing, especially in the highest category. There is no doubt that was 800 is now considered a flop, and even exciting Moto2 championship is now fought, and detached from any notion of continuity with the other categories and the principles of reduced spending. Caramel attack is ready to re-invent and reinvent themselves, hopefully good.

Carmelo Ezpeleta single unit proposed speed limit

Not long ago in Autoblog Moto recover an interview with the newspaper AS published a couple of days before the Malaysian Grand Prix. The interviewee was the always charismatic Carmelo Ezpeleta , a man who seems to have come to its senses and works harder than it looks from the outside. Only he knows what he will have had to do to make MotoGP move on. I say this as an exercise in empathy, a little easier after reading the recent remarks he has made. The point is that this recovery had a domino effect, the words jumped from one medium to another in a matter of days and in just a week had crossed the pond. Well, in CycleNews thought that when in doubt, better to ask themselves, and the number of last week published a very interesting interview with Carmelo - the need for any translation, ask him -.

The director of Dorna back to speak clearly, openly, without hiding his intentions. The questions are in the same direction at that time: the future of the category. But promises us another measure that can be, at least, interesting as it is the only unit for all bikes and a common speed limit on all engines, talking, of course, the real MotoGP.

The real situation is this: the cost is very high MotoGP is a technological battle is not going nowhere. Okay, we are an electronics company that is ... but this is the World Championship for bikes and riders. But the goal is not the technology, the main focus is racing and fighting between drivers. "
It's nothing new, as you know are two measures that have already been adopted in the British Superbike and are getting the 2012, is one of the most anticipated seasons. However this has already led to many lost the essence of competition in the premier class.

The best drivers will remain with the officers, according to Corrado Cecchinelli the gap between a CRT and the official limit is shortened if the electronics. We have already begun this process by imposing 81 mm, but the problem remains of 1000cc, which have much more power than the 800cc. We'll see how it goes next year, but we have to solve the problem. We made the proposal and are awaiting responses, it is clear that we want to put a cap on economic power in 2013, we are thinking a rev limit and a single unit for all, these are the points at which we work. "
Better late than never , some time ago that some manufacturers suffer to remain on the grill or have fled, as I happen to Suzuki or Kawasaki. Furthermore, the current world situation, we saw how even the world champion team - Fiat Yamaha - had trouble getting sponsors for next season. Something must change and we must accept change as soon as possible to enjoy the races.
