Stoner leads Pedrosa and Rossi in Valencia FP1

Stoner set a last minute fast lap to jump to the front of the pack in the first practice session of the Gran Premio Generali de la Comunitat Valenciana, ahead of team mate Pedrosa and Valentino Rossi.

The MotoGP class took to a drying track for the first practice outing of the 2011 season closer, with several tributes to Marco Simoncelli revealed as the bikes hit the asphalt. Loris Capirossi's Ducati displayed Marco Simoncelli's number 58 on his Pramac Racing machine and Hiroshi Aoyama's bike ran unbranded, instead featuring a message to his fallen team mate.

As the riders gingerly made their way around the slippery Ricardo Tormo circuit, various riders took turns at the top of the times, including Toni Elías (LCR Honda), Valentino Rossi (Ducati Team), Nicky Hayden and Capirossi. It wasn’t until the final three minutes that World Champion Casey Stoner claimed the top spot with a time of 1’45.513, with Pedrosa jumping into second, two tenths behind his Repsol Honda team mate.

The Ducati Team duo of Rossi and Hayden posted the third and fourth quickest laps, the Italian just 0.092s off Pedrosa’s pace and Hayden two tenths off his team mate.

For the first practice of his final GP, Capirossi was fifth in the field with a time of 1’46.108, ahead of Factory Yamaha’s Ben Spies. Randy de Puniet (Pramac Racing) was seventh ahead of Elias in eighth and Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda) ninth. Cal Crutchlow (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) completed the top ten times with a lap one second off the lead time of Stoner.

As Colin Edwards continues to recover from the injuries he sustained in Malaysia, his replacement American superbike champion Josh Hayes made an impressive debut on a MotoGP machine, climbing as high as 13th position for not only his first experience in a GP field but also his first time at the Valencian circuit. Hayes concluded the session in – position, ahead of Jorge Lorenzo’s replacement on the Factory Yamaha team, Japanese rider Katsuyuki Nakasuga.

Pedrosa sets FP1 pace in Malaysia

The Repsol Honda team were the three fastest in the first MotoGP outing at the Sepang International Circuit, with Pedrosa leading followed by newly crowned World Champion Stoner second and Dovizioso third.

The MotoGP class began the Shell Advance Malaysian Grand Prix weekend with Dani Pedrosa jumping to the top of the timings shortly after the bikes hit the track, taking over the top spot from team mate Andrea Dovizioso. The Spaniard’s lap of 2’01.916 set on just his seventh lap out dominated the session, with second ranking Casey Stoner only approaching it by 0.641s and Dovizioso by a margin of 0.674.

In fourth with a lap of 2’03.311 was a fourth Honda, the San Carlo Honda Gresini machine of Marco Simoncelli, with Rizla Suzuki’s Álvaro Bautista two tenths behind the Italian to claim fifth. Sixth place went to Ben Spies (Yamaha Factory Racing), who is recovering after a big high last week in Australia that saw the Texan withdraw from the race. His lap of 2’03.586 was a little over a tenth quicker than the first Ducati in the line up of Randy de Puniet (Pramac Racing).

Colin Edwards was eighth followed by Hiroshi Aoyama (San Carlo Honda Gresini) and Valentino Rossi (Ducati Team). Rossi’s team mate Nicky Hayden ranked 12th behind Karel Abraham (Cardion AB Motoracing).

Wildcard John Hopkins (Rizla Suzuki) rode the GSV-R to 14th in the timings, while Yamaha YZR-M1 test rider Katsuyuki Nakasuga, who is stepping in to replace injured Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo, ranked 17th. The Japanese rider saw as high as 11th until the a minor lowside slowed his progression.

Héctor Barberá completed just four full laps before heading to the medical center. The Mapfre Aspar rider is cautiously evaluating his fitness ahead of the race following surgery on the fractured collarbone he suffered in Japan just over two weeks ago.

Bradl tops dramatic FP1 at the Island

Stefan Bradl led the Moto2 field from start to finish until crashing out in the closing seconds of practice, while Championship leader Márquez crashed twice in the session, the final incident involving a direct run in with another rider.

Currently second in the Championship after his fourth place finish at Motegi, a determined Stefan Bradl (Viessmann Kiefer Racing) led the first practice outing from start to finish, slicing through traffic to set the fastest time of the session of 1’34.039.

The new Championship leader as of the last round, Marc Márquez (Team CatalunyaCaixa Repsol), crashed in the grass on his fourth lap out and was only able to rejoin the outing for the final 60 seconds, wherein he struck Ratthapark Wilairot (Thai Honda Singha-SAG) in an intense collision.

Bradl’s time was nine tenths ahead of nearest contender Alex de Angelis (JiR Moto2) with Mika Kallio (Marc VDS Racing) just edging Claudio Corti (Italtrans Racing) by 0.007s to take the third spot in the timings. The two were the final riders under a second behind the leading German.

Mattia Pasini (Ioda Racing Project) ranked fifth with his time of 1’35.125, ahead of Andrea Iannone (Speed Master) and Anthony West (MZ Racing). Scott Redding (Marc VDS Racing) followed in eighth, while Mike di Meglio (Tech 3 Racing) enjoyed a top ten ranking in ninth. Michele Pirro (Gresini Racing Moto2) completed the top ten.

Other session incidents included Simone Corsi (Ioda Racing Project) and Yonny Hernández (Blusens-STX) both going down in separate high speed crashes, though both were up and walking directly after, while Xavier Simeon (Tech 3 B) went for a long fast ride across the grass though managed to keep it upright.

Cortese stars in Phillip Island opener

Sandro Cortese reigned supreme as the World Championship returned to Phillip Island today with the Intact Racing Team Germany rider on top form in the first free practice at the Australian circuit, ahead of Terol and Faubel.

The 125cc World Championship track action began on Friday under bright sunshine with practice sessions set one hour later than usual as the German rider set the pace with a 1’38.805, a margin of 0.135s over current standings leader Nicolas Terol (Bankia Aspar). Héctor Faubel followed his team mate with a 1’39.132 lap time with Johann Zarco (Avant-AirAsia-Ajo) following by 0.217s to assume fourth.

Maverick Viñales (Blusens by Paris Hilton Racing) grabbed the fifth spot in the timings for his first outing at the southern Australian circuit, with a substantial 6 tenths margin over the next group of close ranking riders led a third Bankia Aspar rider, Adrián Martín.

Alberto Moncayo (Team Andalucía Banca Cívica) follwed Martín by 0.054s, with Danny Kent (Red Bull Ajo Motorsport) and Jonas Folger (Red Bull Ajo Motorsport) both 0.012s behind the Spaniard to take the eighth and ninth spots.Efrén Vázquez (Avant-AirAsia-Ajo) was two tenths off Folger and 1.5s off the leader Cortese in tenth.

Luis Salom crashed early, and while the rider was up and OK, his bike was carried out of the gravel by track marshals. He finished the session in 31st, just behind the highest ranking wildcard of the session, Joshua Hook (HookRacing.com).

Fast start for Stoner in Australia

The Australian took control at his home track while title defender Lorenzo lapped in second place and Simoncelli ranked third fastest in the field.

Despite the weather forecast calling for rain showers, the first day of track action at the Iveco Grand Prix of Australia began under a cloudless sky as Casey Stoner continued his domination this season at a track where he won last year, setting the fastest lap of the session with a time of 1’30.475 despite an early crash.

The Repsol Honda rider went down in turn 4 inside of the first ten minutes of the session after decimating the field, lapping over a second ahead of the rest of the pack, which was led by Marco Simoncelli until he too went down early in turn 10. The Italian quickly recovered after sliding out at the bottom of the hill to rank third with a time of 1’30.744, two tenths behind Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha Factory Racing) in second.

Colin Edwards had a positive session at his favorite track, placing fourth in the field with a fast lap of 1’31.480, while Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda) lapped just one hundredth of a second behind the Texan in fifth.

Fresh from his third victory of the season at Motegi, Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda) ranked sixth at a track he could not race at last year due to injury, 0.091s in front of the fastest Ducati in the session, the GP11.1 of Nicky Hayden.

Ben Spies (Yamaha Factory Racing) and Hiroshi Aoyama (San Carlo Honda Gresini) landed eighth and ninth quickest in the session, while Loris Capirossi (Pramac Racing) enjoyed a positive session on his return to racing with a ranking of tenth.

Damien Cudlin, who replaced an injured Capirossi at the Motegi round, is appearing again at his home track as a replacement for Héctor Barberá (Mapfre Aspar) who is also out due to injury. The Australian paced 4 tenths behind Toni Elías (LCR Honda) in 16th.

Smith gets a flying start in first Motegi practice

Tech 3 Racing rider Bradley Smith was fastest in the first Moto2 outing at the Twin Ring Motegi circuit with Andrea Iannone and Thomas Lüthi completing the top three.

Smith topped the opening outing for the 600 class at the Grand Prix of Japan, with a time of 1’53.806. Iannone (Speed Master) made his charge to regain the leading time on his final lap, though ran out of fuel before he could complete it and his time from lap 14 of 16 was 0.092s behind the Brit, putting the Italian second and leaving him to push his bike to the pits.

Lüthi (Interwetten Paddock Moto2) posted the third fastest lap with a 1’53.909, with Esteve Rabat (Blusens-STX) grabbing fourth and Stefan Bradl (Viessmann Kiefer Racing) fifth. Simone Corsi (Ioda Racing Project) posted sixth quickest in the session with a 1’54.153, with Swiss rider Dominique Aegerter (Technomag-CIP) following by just 6 thousandths of a second to place seventh.

Yuki Takahashi (Gresini Racing) ended the session in eighth at his home round with a time of 1’54.212, while Championship contender Marc Márquez (Team CatalunyaCaixa Repsol) was ninth and Mika Kallio (Marc VDS Racing) completed the top ten times.

Alex de Angelis (JiR Moto2) posted11th after a having runoff, while Espargaró brothers Aleix (Pons HP 40) and Pol (HP Tuenti Speed Up) finished within three hundredths of each other in 12th and 13th.

Stoner quickest off the mark in Japan

The Australian began the weekend in a focused manner, leading the way at Honda’s home track with Italian team mate Dovizioso following and Ducati Team’s Nicky Hayden posting the third fastest time.

Casey Stoner (Repsol Honda) continued his domination of the field at a track where he won last year, setting the fastest lap of the session with a time of 1’47.289, three tenths quicker than his team mate Andrea Dovizioso. Despite an early run off, Nicky Hayden stepped into the top three with a time of 1’47.732 at a track he finished 12th at last year.

Fourth in the field was another Repsol Honda rider, Dani Pedrosa, whose time was just over a half second off the leading time posted by Stoner, while fifth was occupied by Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo with a time of 1’47.912.

Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini Team) lost the front in turn 9 and went down with 15 minutes remaining, the Italian then ran back to his box and rejoined the session, ending the outing with the sixth fastest time. Colin Edwards followed in seventh with a 1'48.169, with Ben Spies (Yamaha Factory Racing) taking eighth ahead of Héctor Barberá (Mapfre Aspar) and Valentino Rossi (Ducati Team).

Hiroshi Aoyama (San Carlo Honda Gresini) landed 11th in the field at his home track, while HRC test riders and wild cards for the MotoGP class, Kousuke Akiyoshi (LCR Honda) and Shinishi Itoh (Honda Racing Team), finished the session in 17th and 18th.

Bautista in the top 10 at slippery Indianapolis

Bautista was one of the busiest riders today, as he completed 41 laps around the 4,216m circuit during the two sessions He recorded his best time of 1’42.231 on his penultimate lap and is sure that both he and the Suzuki GSV-R have more to give this weekend. Bautista worked hard with his crew to get the best of the difficult conditions at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, as the newly surfaced circuit presented a whole lot of problems for all riders. The recently laid asphalt has not had much use, making it very slippery, but as the day wore on - and more rubber was laid down by the bikes from all three classes - the conditions improved, enabling Bautista to record a time three seconds quicker in the afternoon than he did in the morning.

Álvaro Bautista: 
“This afternoon I was able to improve my lap time because the track conditions were better than they were this morning. We still have some problems with turning the bike - we didn’t have good grip this morning because of the new surface, so this afternoon we tried to get more grip from the rear. We changed the setting of the bike, but because the track had improved and grip was better we lost a bit more turning in the corner. Now we know the track is much better, so for tomorrow we will try another setting and I’m sure that will improve things even further. We still have a lot of work to do, but I am happy with situation at the moment. We are in ninth position and I know we can still improve quite a lot. I hope to continue with the way we have been working today and in recent weeks in tomorrow’s sessions and I think we can take the bike further forward ready for Sunday.”

Spies holds off Stoner and Edwards

A clear and sunny day opened the first practice session for the premier class upon their return to the United States, with a newly paved track welcoming them to the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix weekend. While lap times would be expected to be quicker thanks to the resurfacing, it seems the track was slightly dirty and still needs a bit more rubber the help with the grip.

Last year’s pole man and second place race finisher Ben Spies (Yamaha Factory Racing) took the top spot with 18 minutes remaining, after progressing through the ranks at the beginning of the session to post a final time of 1’43.260.

Casey Stoner (Repsol Honda) had moved into the lead with a minute and half remaining with a lap of 1'43.552, but it wasn’t enough to hold off Spies, and the Australian finished the session sandwiched between two Americans on Yamaha’s when Colin Edwards (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) stepped into third with a time of 1’43.574.

San Carlo Honda Gresini rider Marco Simoncelli is fresh off his first premier class podium in Brno and full of confidence. The rider’s time of 1’43.582 put him fourth in the timings, but the Italian had led much of the practice session.

Nicky Hayden (Ducati Team) was the third American in the top five times, his lap of 1’44.236 was 0.126s ahead of his team mate Valentino Rossi. Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda) was sixth fastest with a time of 1’44.551, followed by Mapfre Aspar rider Héctor Barberá and Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha Factory Racing) in ninth.

Last year’s Indianapolis race winner Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda) placed tenth in the session with a time of 1’45.192 after entering his box several times in the practice.

MotoGP rookie Karel Abraham (Cardion ab Motoracing) had an issue with his machine on the first lap, the Czech rider was able to rejoin the session but had another mechanical problem and retired to his box in the remaining 5 minutes.

Pedrosa off to a flying start at Brno

The MotoGP bikes hit the track for the first practice session of round 11, with grey clouds overhead and cool temperatures welcoming the field into the second half of the season. Pedrosa took his Repsol Honda on a flying lap of 1.56’328, substantially faster than the rest of the field and the only rider under the 1.57” mark.

Fresh off the back of a victory at Laguna Seca Stoner, Casey Stoner (Repsol Honda) was second in the field, though his lap of 1'57.294 was nearly a second behind the Spaniard. Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini Team), who topped the timesheets briefly with 30 minutes to go, was 1.080s behind Pedrosa and third fastest of the session. The Italian ended the session with a crash in turn 13 but was unhurt.

Last year’s race winner Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha Factory Racing) posted his best time of 1'57.587, two tenths behind Simoncelli to put him fourth in the standings. Repsol Honda rider Andrea Dovizioso was fifth quickest as he took his factory RC212V around in a best time of 1'57.776. That placed the Italian 0.127s ahead of Ben Spies (Racing), who was sixth on his Yamaha Factory YZR-M1.

Wild card John Hopkins who is returning for a second race aboard the Rizla Suzuki set an impressive seventh fastest time, followed by the other Rizla Suzuki of Álvaro Bautista. Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Cal Crutchlow and Colin Edwards werninth and tenth, respectively, with Valentino Rossi (Ducati Team) three tenths outside the top ten times.
MotoGP rookie Karel Abraham (Cardion ab Motoracing) debuting as the first Czech rider to compete in the premier class at his a Grand Prix since 1989, was sixteenth in the standings.

Bautista seventh and on the pace in the Californian sun

Álvaro Bautista followed on from his strong performance last weekend in Germany to produce his best first day’s performance of the season so far at Laguna Seca today.

Bautista (P7, 1’23.056, 49 laps), was in constant touch with the top-six through the afternoon session, even though he couldn’t find the rear grip from his Rizla Suzuki that he wanted over the 3,610m American circuit. He worked hard with his crew to get the levels of adhesion that he is looking for to make the next step up and compete with the group in front of him. Bautista still believes there is more to come from him and his machine over the rest of the weekend and is in a confident mood as he heads towards tomorrow’s qualifying session.

Today’s afternoon practice was held in brilliant sunshine with cloudless skies covering the Laguna Seca Raceway. World Champion Jorge Lorenzo on a Yamaha was the fastest rider of the day, with last weekend’s winner Dani Pedrosa second and current championship leader Casey Stoner in third. Bautista is only a second from first place and will be looking to break into a 1’22 lap tomorrow, a feat which was only achieved by the top-six today.

Rizla Suzuki has a free practice session of 45-minutes tomorrow morning followed by an hour of qualifying in the afternoon. Sunday’s 32-lap race is the 10th of the season and the action gets underway at 14.00hrs local time (21.00hrs GMT).

Álvaro Bautista:

“This morning the track was very cold so we started with the softer tyres and from the beginning it felt like we didn’t have very much grip from the rear when entering a corner. The contact feeling wasn’t quite right so we worked on improving that and we also tried some different electronics settings for the spin control. In the second session the track temperatures had increased so we used the harder compound tyres, but we seemed to have the same problem as this morning with corner entry grip. This didn’t give me a good feeling and made me slower in the corner and on the exit than I wanted to be. We worked hard to try and resolve it but we didn’t quite manage it, so it gives us something to work towards tomorrow. My lap-times and rhythm were not too bad though and I was able to follow some fast guys quite easily, so this is a good sign. I hope that tomorrow we can improve on the rear grip and do some work on the gearbox, because we are not at our maximum here just yet. So we have a lot of work to do on Saturday, but at the moment I am very confident because my feeling is positive like it was last week in Germany.”

“It’s been a very solid first day here at Laguna Seca for Álvaro and the Rizla Suzuki team. The performance at Sachsenring last weekend has helped his confidence and it’s clear that he has brought a slightly different tactic to Friday’s sessions to try and be as close to the lead group’s pace as he possibly can, as we head to qualifying on Saturday. We’re pretty close to the front guys everywhere except for the third section, but if we can find a decent step in lap-time there, and improve the overall rear grip, we should be in good shape for the rest of the weekend.”

Positive first day for Bautista in Germany

Bautista recorded a quickest time of 1’23.261 from his 46 laps around the 3,671m German circuit, to put him in ninth place in the overall standings and just over one second off the provisional pole position. Bautista tried both compounds of Bridgestone race tyres to find the compound best suited to his Suzuki GSV-R. He is sure that if conditions improve, he will be able to reduce his lap-times significantly and move up the leader-board as he prepares for Sunday’s race.

Álvaro Bautista:
“Today has been a good day, because finally the rain didn’t make an appearance! This morning it was quite difficult because the track was cold and grip was at a minimum. I took it careful and just got the feel of the bike because I didn’t want to crash like some of the other guys did. This afternoon we tried different combinations of tyres to get the best mix for the bike. I started with a used set of soft ones from this morning’s session and then changed to harder ones on the front and rear. These didn’t give me such a good feeling and I swapped the front for a soft and this was better. The rear worked well, but I still had some sliding from the left side and found it difficult to get a good line through the corners. I felt I had a good rhythm throughout the whole practice and I think that I can certainly improve quite a bit tomorrow, especially if the conditions are better as this will give us more grip from the rear and we will have a good opportunity to move forward.”

Simoncelli tops chaotic first practice

The MotoGP riders hit the track for the first practice of the weekend under cool (track 16ºC) conditions with wind that seemed to have been a factor in the five crashes, four of them in the fast turn 11 at the top of the hill, that marked the first half of FP1.

Simoncelli dominated much of the session despite the difficult conditions, setting a fastest lap time of 1'22.823, a second behind the lap record held by Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda). 0.181s behind the Italian was Stoner, who was the first rider in the field to crash, but returned unfazed to put in a time of 1'23.004.

Lorenzo, who completed 24 laps, the most of the field, was third in the timings, following the Australian by 0.042s, and ahead of Ducati rider Hayden by 0.159s. Repsol Honda’s Andrea Dovizioso followed in fifth, with Karel Abraham (Cardion AB Motoracing) riding strong to set a sixth fastest time of 1'23.416.

Héctor Barberá (Mapfre Aspar) built on the good form he showed in Mugello, placing seventh with a time of 1'23.433, beating out Randy De Puniet (Pramac Racing), Ben Spies (Yamaha Factory Racing) and Colin Edwards (Monster Yamaha Tech 3).

Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda), who had started session with good pace before crashing in turn 11, managed eleventh after reentering the session, ahead of Álvaro Bautista (Rizla Suzuki) in 12th with a time of 1'23.989. Cal Crutchlow (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) had an early runoff in turn 8, finishing in 13th position with a time of 1'24.162.

Valentino Rossi fell victim to the same corner 11, tumbling in the gravel, though walking away from the crash. The Italian was taken to the Medical Center to be checked out and was found to have no serious injuries, though the lost track time placed him 14th in the standings, while Toni Elías (LCR Honda) only completed a total of seven laps after crashing twice, first in turn 11 and then in turn 1, to place sixteenth.

Stoner Fastest On 1st Free Practice At Qatar

Casey Stoner took his best time on 1st free practice at Qatar MotoGP 1'55.752, 0.610 in front of his teammate Dani Pedrosa. A surprise came from Hector Barbera from Aspar Mapfire. Barbera took 3rd place, 0.669 behind Casey Stoner. 2010 MotoGP world champion Jorge Lorenzo only on 7th place, or one place behind his new teammate Ben Spies. 

Good progress came from Valentino Rossi with his Ducati on 5th place. Valentino Rossi took 1'23.493, behind Marco Simoncelli, the other Italian rider, on the 4th place.

Pedrosa Crash On FP1 Motegi

Dani Pedrosa was crashed when FP1 MotoGP at Motegi just running on 6 minutes. This Spaniard is the only one rider who can beat Jorge Lorenzo as the leader. Now we'll wait for Pedrosa, he will back for this weekend race or not. According to the circuit official, Dani Pedrosa is suspected injury on his collarbone. Pedrosa was lost control under braking and limped from the bike. He was carried away from track on a stretcher. 


If Pedrosa cannot race again for Motegi and rest of this season race, Lorenzo will get his 1st title on MotoGP. Lorenzo now is 56 points ahead Dani Pedrosa after he miss his 1st podium on this season last 2 weeks at Aragon.
